Chrism Mass welcomes all; priests renew promises

BY ELIZABETH WONG BARNSTEAD, THE WESTERN KENTUCKY CATHOLIC

This year, the Diocese of Owensboro’s Chrism Mass was held March 31, on Tuesday of Holy Week. During this special Mass, the priests of the diocese renew their commitment to priestly service, the bishop blesses the Oil of the Sick and Oil of Catechumens and consecrates the Sacred Chrism.

The oils are distributed to parish representatives at the end of Mass, for use in their communities throughout the year.

During his homily, which he gave in English and in Spanish, Bishop Medley emphasized that the diocese’s cultural diversity is what makes the Catholic community of western Kentucky so beautiful.

He also encouraged all Catholics and people of good will to call their elected officials to encourage them to support migrants and refugees, and to continue supporting these newcomers, who are now a part of the local community.

“To God be the glory. Holy is God’s name,” the bishop concluded.
