Western Kentucky flood survivors need our help
BY BELINDA ABELL, SPECIAL TO THE WESTERN KENTUCKY CATHOLIC
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul stands ready to assist our western Kentucky neighbors as they rebuild their lives after the torrential rainstorms in April. A storm so rare, it was categorized as a once in a lifetime event, devasted western Kentucky families, their homes, businesses, and vehicles, all underwater. Thousands have been affected by the flood waters in western Kentucky. Many have lost everything and are in for a long recovery period.
Both the Ohio and the Green Rivers exceeded their banks, forcing evacuations of cities and some western Kentucky counties. While all of western Kentucky was affected, the hardest hit areas are in the counties where those rivers run next to cities/towns, especially the smaller communities. It will take months if not longer to go through the process of rebuilding not just their homes but their lives.
Insurance adjusters are working long hours as well as roofers and general contractors – if a homeowner is lucky enough to get back into their home this early. Many are still stranded in limbo as they wait for the water to recede. Unfortunately, insurance rarely covers everything. Alleviating those worries are where St. Vincent de Paul can help. Donate now to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Diocesan Council’s Flood Relief Campaign to help western Kentucky flood survivors rebuild their homes and families.
Together we can make a difference!
