The spotlight shone brightly on the St. Vincent DePaul Diocesan Council of Western Kentucky as they emerged the recipients of the prestigious DSC Council of the Year Award. The award was bestowed at the Sept. 6-9, 2023 St. Vincent de Paul National Assembly held this year in St. Louis Missouri, the birthplace of the Society in America in 1845.

This national award recognized the efforts put forth by a team to serve 2021 tornado survivors throughout western Kentucky. This impactful work was led by St. Vincent de Paul chief executive officer, Richard B. Remp-Morris who said, “Our amazing service was accomplished through the dedicated efforts of many St. Vincent de Paul unsung heroes including the Diocesan Council Board; Patrick Clary, warehouse manager; and warehouse assistants, Lee Wilson and Herbert ‘Herbie’ Allgood. Also included in the efforts are Vicki Duncan, community liaison; and Belinda Abell, marketing coordinator.”

At the heart of their humanitarian efforts lies the House In a Box program, an initiative led by the St. Vincent DePaul Diocesan Council of Western Kentucky. This program has been a lifeline for families who lost everything in the wake of disasters, providing them with new furniture and furnishings to rebuild their lives.

Remp-Morris expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve more than 300 tornado survivor families, to date, with the goal of serving 500 families.

He said, “This has been a humbling experience, meeting the tornado survivors and hearing their horrific stories. I’ve felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and support in serving those in need alongside fellow Vincentians, Disaster Services Corp, Catholic Charities, American Red Cross, VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters), and Long-Term Recovery groups.”

St. Vincent de Paul Diocesan Council president, Nancy Harris, added “We are extremely honored to receive this prestigious award from our peers. It recognizes the great effort from our team and many community partners. Direct service in times of crisis is at the heart of Vincentian spirituality”.
